#MusicMondays: The Four Owls - Life in the Balance (Feat. Jam Baxter)

I stumbled across this track back in 2011 when a friend shared it on facebook. I'm not a smoker but something about the thumbnail made me click play. I'd never heard of 'The Four Owls' or the label High Focus at that point, and I don't think I was alone, they were just starting to become popular and this track/video definitely helped towards their well deserved growth in popularity. 

The lyrics immediately caught my attention, discussing conscious awareness, the power of positivity and thought and the balance of karma.

I also have a soft spot for the Mayan culture and the limited understanding we have of their teachings so the mentions of them throughout struck a chord with me.

I'm chuffed to have watched the growth of Fliptrix and his Brighton based label, High Focus, since then, with notable releases from majorly talented individuals such as Jam Baxter, Edward Scissortongue, Leaf Dog and more recently Onoe Caponoe plus many others.

3 years on The Four Owls have just done the unthinkable for a UK Based Hip Hop collective, they've just collaborated with Hip Hop royalty, DJ Premier. Well deserved recognition- here's to many more.

My Ayahuasca Journey: Just The Beginning

The view from our room. We're back to life, back to reality - although, life seemed pretty damn real whilst away on the retreat this weekend.  I managed to record my thoughts in this video of the first Ayahuasca ceremony, yet after the second and third I didn't feel it was right.  Here's what happened on the first night: I'm going to sum up what happened on the second night - no doubt there will be things missing but whatever flows through my clumsily typing fingers right now is obvs what I'm 'meant' to share.  The second night was just as daunting as the first going into it. We were told that this brew would be stronger than the initial dose the night before and that the experience would be different. And it was. Something I'd learnt about Ayahuasca is that it is very helpful to go into the session with an 'intention' which could be a question you'd like the answer for or an enlightening inspiration you'd like t

The UK Bass Music show on Sub FM with Lara & Nikki

Lara and I host a monthly slot on internet radio station, Sub FM where we curate the UK Bass Music show representing music we love and write about on our blog, ukbassmusic.com Whilst we're still starting out and getting used to the technicals (neither of us are DJs) the idea of being able to present some of the amazing music we get sent to our listeners is what helps crack the initial nerves... it's about the music and the spreading of the love first and foremost, we also stream our faces live over on facebook each show to increase the reach of the sounds. You can lock in every 4 Monday's (next one 11th Jan 2018) and in the meantime you can listen or watch back the shows and appreciate this sick music with us.

The journey continues...

For most of my adult life, at least as long as I can remember I've had this strong attraction to the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu high up in the mountains in Cusco, Peru, South America. I didn't know anything about it apart from seeing beautiful images and developed a  knowing that one day I would love to experience it. My growing love for Radio Presenting

A couple of years ago I wrote on this blog  about how much I would love to present my own radio show. It's something that has been in the back of my mind for years and years but my lack of personal confidence always stopped me from pursuing it seriously. Amazingly, off the back of that post I was invited to appear as a guest host for the TRAP93 show on Reprezent FM which was a fantastic experience at a well-run community based station that is doing great things, and seeing how supportive their environment is for it's members and the artists it features and promotes really watered my interest in the world of radio. Fast forwarding to 2018 (how has time gone so quickly?) I am now presenting the UK Bass Music show with my co-host, Lara on Subtle FM. It's a monthly show, and although we've only presented two shows from the studio so far, I'm becoming more comfortable and (hopefully) more entertaining for the listeners.
